How To Setup L2TP on Ubuntu

Follow these simple steps to get connected quickly and securely.

Get WorldVPN Credentials

  • Ensure you have your WorldVPN account credentials ready, including your username, password, and the server address. Find your assigned server address by logging into the VPN panel at https://www.worldvpn.net/client/login and navigating to the Servers menu. Note: For L2TP, use the preshared key "worldvpn".

Install L2TP Support

  • Open a terminal and install the necessary packages: sudo apt update && sudo apt install network-manager-l2tp network-manager-l2tp-gnome

Add VPN Configuration

  • Click on the network icon in the top-right corner of your Ubuntu desktop.
  • Select "Settings" or go to Settings > Network.
  • In the left sidebar, click on "VPN".
  • Click the "+" button to add a new VPN connection.
  • Select "Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)" from the list.

Fill in Details

  • Name: Enter a name for the VPN connection (e.g., WorldVPN L2TP).
  • Gateway: Input your assigned server address from the VPN panel.
  • User: Enter your WorldVPN username.
  • Password: Input your WorldVPN password (or select "Ask for password" if you prefer to enter it each time).
  • NT Domain: Leave this blank.
  • Click on "IPsec Settings" and enter "worldvpn" as the Pre-shared key.

Save Configuration

  • Click "Add" or "Save" to save the VPN configuration.

Connect to WorldVPN

  • Activate VPN Connection: Go back to the network settings or click the network icon and select the VPN connection you just created to connect.
  • Authenticate: If prompted, enter your password.

Verify Connection

  • Once connected, you should see a VPN icon or lock in the network indicator. You can also check the VPN settings to ensure the connection is active and displaying the "Connected" status next to your configured L2TP VPN.
